Legends of Rock Step Aside, Here Comes Crobot

Remember the name Crobot because I’m sure you are going to be hearing a lot of that name in the coming years. They’re a sci-fi influenced hard rock/stoner rock band with a singer who is one of the most dynamic front men I’ve seen in a long time. And he sings like a motherf**ker too.

I first saw Crobot last year when I went to Harrisburg in Pennsylvania for the Millennium Music Conference. I was completely blown away by them and when I received an email last week inviting me to a showcase they were doing for Wind Up Records at Arlene’s Grocery in the Lower East Side, I looked forward to seeing them again.

They came on early, around 5.30pm, but the room was packed with people anyway who were completely drawn into the world of Crobot. Brandon Yeagley looks like a young good looking Lemmy and pulls Jack Black faces as he dances around his microphone stand. Guitarist Bishop drives the sound and slings his guitar around his back mid song with cool nonchalance like nothing is going on.

They reference some classic rock for their sound but make it all their own. Obvious influences are Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Wolfmother, Kyuss, Queens Of The Stone Age and Clutch, so if you like those bands you should definitely check them out. Since they recorded the album Brandon and Bishop have been joined by a new bass player and drummer who happen to be brothers and kick the bottom end into life with a vengeance.

It looks like Wind Up are going to sign them, but when I talked with Brandon afterwards he told me they have thirty new songs ready to go, so doesn’t know if Wind Up will be releasing ‘Legend of The Spaceborne Killer’ or whether they will simply move on and record something entirely new.

Either way, you should get the album whilst you can from here and check on their website to see if this superb band is going to be playing anywhere near you sometime soon.
