Savannah Valentino has a sweet voice and disposition to match. She’s a pretty good songwriter too. Especially for an eighteen year old. A few weeks ago I went to Richmond, VA to do a photo shoot with her before she played at Frogville, a very cool backyard gig held annually by the delightful Hanczaryk family.
I caught the train from NYC to Richmond and discovered the delights of Amtrak in operation. The train was massively overbooked and so I found a spot on the floor and grabbed as much sleep as I could in the circumstances. I arrived in Richmond around 11am and was picked up from the train station by Andy Rubin, Savannah’s manager and Phil Hanczaryk.
After I took a shower at the Hanczaryk’s, Andy, Savannah and I went for a wander around Richmond looking for locations. We found a few. One of the coolest was this cemetery filled with plastic flowers. Another was the old shed at the back of her house. And we found more downtown, where I shot these last couple of images.
Savannah Valentino is definitely talented. Watch out for her brand of country Americana over the next couple of years as I have no doubt she will be successful in her efforts to continue building her audience.
