So yesterday was the first day of FIGMENT in NYC on Governors Island. It was a huge day with thousands of people thronging the island. The was the fourth year the MORE Drums were a big success with people playing them all day long. I shot these pictures and video through the course of the day.
When I first arrived there were only a few people on the drums and within 5 minutes am huge crowd had gathered and were pounding away with delight. The rhythm held strong and a girl climbed the bell and rang it in time to the drums.
After a couple of hours I moved the drums away from the bell because too many kids were climbing up to ring the bell and although they were having fun, it was disturbing the rhythm of the drums.
At one point there was such a large crowd around the MORE Drums it was difficult to see them. But we could still hear them.
My friend Tyrone Noonan has recorded a fantastic new album and is leaving to pursue his career back in Australia in a couple of days, so we had a picnic to celebrate his time in NYC and the FIGMENT weekend. I’ll probably write a blog about Tyrone in the next few days as well.
After we’d wrapped on the island I trekked up to North Bronx to shoot the Lost Horizon Night Market, which was disappointingly under populated, both with trucks and people because most of the people who’d get involved or attend are at FIGMENT this weekend. But that’s a whole other story that can wait for another occasion.
Towards the end of the day I shot some quick pictures around the Sculpture Terrace and Mini Golf Course.
I’m just uploading these pictures and video now and am going to head back down to Governors Island for the last day of FIGMENT. If you are in NYC, come down and join me. I will be with the MORE Drums at Chapel Bazaar, near the mini golf course and the Sculpture Terrace. See you there.
