Happy Valentine’s Day to all the Lover’s out there. And to all the people currently without a Lover. We all need some Love in our lives. Even Rhett and Scarlett. I shot this picture last week for the Greater New York section of the Wall Street Journal as part of a series on Wine Stores around NYC.
I found out after I’d shot most of the stores that the focus of the story was Valentine’s Day, so at the end of the day I went back to the first one I’d shot up on 96th St and took this image as it was the only store which had any kind of Valentine’s Day display. It looked like they were doing well with it, so I suspect that for some people who wanted a special drink, Valentine’s Day may have come early this year.
I was happy with the other pictures I shot and so thought I’d post them here so they get seen somewhere. That can sometimes be one of the frustrating things about shooting images. They don’t get seen. Which is why blogging has become one of the outlets for photographers who want to show more of their work after the editors have made their choices.
This next picture is by far and away my favourite from the days shoot.
Last year I wrote in this blog about a very sweet couple I’d met on the street who were scared their parents would find out they were in love. And not because their allowance might get cut off, but because the threat of very real physical violence to both of them was quite high as her family are strict Muslims and would never agree to them being together. I disagree with such an extreme perspective and have always believed that love is between the people involved with one another.
