NYC was stomped into submission by The Kills last Thursday when they played an extraordinary show to a packed Bowery Ballroom. Their ferocious blend of garage blues keeps them head and shoulders above the pack, which was underlined by the massive line of CMJ badge holders waiting outside the Bowery Ballroom hoping to get in. Unsuccessfully, it turned out. I was grateful to venue manager Kieren for rescuing me from the line and walking me in the door.
Once inside I found myself consistently squashed as I shot these pictures through the show. Highlights of the set were Pots and Pans, Monkey 23, No Wow and DNA with special mention for Satellite. Alison was sporting blond hair and James cracked smiles throughout the night, with both of them obviously happy with the show at the end of it all.
And show/CMJ sponsors Champion must have been happy as well. They had some strong images hanging on the walls and appear to be making a move towards the cool scene under the direction of their new Creative Director.
Alison came outside just as I was pulling away on the bicycle. I stopped and thanked her for a great show. As we were chatting a couple of fans came up and asked if they could take some pictures with her. Even though she was obviously exhausted she was gracious and kind with the fans and it was lovely to see the genuine way she engaged with them before being ushered into her car and driven away.
The Kills are currently working on a new album and I for one will be getting it when it comes out sometime next year. I suggest you do the same.
