Coney Island Mermaid Parade was started back in 1983 for New Yorkers to celebrate the beginning of summer and so irrespective of the weather, it takes place every year on the Saturday closest to the calendar start of the season. It’s roots lie in the Coney Island Mardi Gras Parades of the early 20th century and it now attracts up to a couple of thousand participants and several hundred thousand spectators.
This year I avoided the parade itself and strolled along the Boardwalk afterwards, which is where I took these pictures. For me, the crowd to be found on the Boardwalk are the real stars of the show. Later in the day I caught the subway back to Gowanus Ballroom with members of Kostume Kult for the Drunken Mermaid Gala after party, which rocked hard until the early hours of the morning with the help of San Francisco’s Extra Action Marching Band.
