I’ve been listening to the excellent Niabi for the last few days. Best described as ambient dreampop mixed with a bit of shoegaze, it reminds me a little of an updated Cocteau Twins, ethereal voices layered over lush soundscapes. She played a short set accompanied by Cryssy Cheung on violin at Piano’s on Thursday night, which is where I took these pictures.
She’s influenced by the mighty Eno and superb Slowdive as well as female synth divas like the late Broadcast vocalist Trish Keenan, Dorit Chrysler and Dr Who soundtrack co-composer Delia Derbyshire. I’d probably throw Blonde Redhead in there as well. Niabi has about twenty songs online, half a dozen of which (including the excellent Forest Fire EP which came out last year) it’s possible to download for free at her bandcamp and soundcloud pages. The cool video at the bottom of this page is for the song We’ll Always End Up On Fire.
She’s going to be playing more shows around NYC over the next few months, so I’d advise you to go see her if you are in the city. Check her Facebook page for the dates.
